Abstract
Saudi Arabia is the heart of the Islamic world, hosting Haji, a mega religious annual event (Haq. 2013). Recently the Saudi government has sought to capitalize on this expertise by developing its event sector. The tourism industry in general and event tourism in particular represent an ideal opportunity to diversify the economy and create jobs. The Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (SCTNH) collaborates with other Saudi National Government Organizations (GOs) to develop the tourism industry including its event sector. This chapter provides an overview of the Saudi event tourism sector including the existing opportunities, highlights the challenges in developing the sector, and the government initiatives to overcome challenges.
