Abstract
This paper presents a technique to determine the aerodynamic forces coefficients for a flexible membrane wing (sail). The method is based on a numerical technique using the vortex lattice method. The sections of the wings are described as cubic polynomial shapes. The method is based on the matricial solving of a set of simultaneous equations with the equivalent vortices strengths as variables. An example of calculations are provided for a parrellipedic sail planform. The solution is expressed in terms of a range of excess length of fabric. This technique can be used in coordination with a constrained numerical optimizer program to design optimal sails shapes.
