Abstract

Circadian rhythm sleep wake disorders (CRSWD), defined as inappropriately timed sleep due to misalignment between the internal rhythm and the required timing of the patient’s school or social activities, are common in adolescents with mental health disorders. Interventions that target circadian disruptions improve the mental health of patients with mental health disorders and increase the effectiveness of psychiatric interventions. The objectives of the presentation are to: 1) define CRSWD and characterize their comorbidity with mental health disorders in adolescents; 2) briefly explain the key processes related to circadian rhythms in sleep and wakefulness; and 3) review methods for diagnosing and treating CRSWD.
