Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses that derivatives of benzopyran-4-one, commonly known as chromones (I), are an important class of compounds because of their pharmacological significance, and one of the derivatives, disodium cromoglycate (II) is present in clinical use for allergic bronchial asthma. It reviews that chromones containing another heterocyclic ring, either attached or fused, possess considerable pharmacological activity. These observations, together with the interest in compounds of related structure, led to discuss this in detail. The chapter covers compounds of type (III) where A is a five-, or a six-membered heterocyclic ring containing at least one nitrogen atom. Compounds in which ring A or B is further fused to a benzenoid ring, are also included. In the main, compounds containing aromatised heterocyclic rings are described. Systematic names of all the compounds are given. 4-oxopyrano is also known as pyrano. The chapter is divided into two parts: Pyranoazoles and pyranoazines.
