Abstract
According to the most recent data published by the Child Welfare Information Gateway, there were 423,997 children in the foster care system as of September 30, 2019. Of these, approximately one-third (32%) were in relative homes whereas approximately half (46%) were in nonrelative homes. The literature supports that youth impacted by the foster care system are at higher risk for development of DSM-5–defined mental health conditions. Yet, some studies show that out-of-home placement can be protective in supporting the development of emotion regulation skills when foster parents are provided with systemic support and succeed in associated skill development.
