Physical Data: bp 118–120 °C/13 mm Hg.1 Solubility: soluble in most commonly used organic solvents. Form Supplied in: clear oil, commercially available with 0.5% hydroquinone as stabilizer. Analysis of Reagent Purity: 1H NMR. Preparative Methods: most commonly synthesized by ozonolysis of (Z)-1-((4-(benzyloxy)but-2-enyloxy)methyl)benzene2 or by oxidative cleavage of meso-1,4-bis(benzyloxy)butane-2,3-diol.3 Purification: the oil can be purified by column chromatography on silica gel and/or distillation. Handling, Storage, and Precautions: store in a freezer, under an inert atmosphere; after some weeks of storage, purification by distillation is recommended. Use in a fume hood.
