Abstract

This paper describes a new method of controlling an auto-wheelchair based on the facial orientations at a moment of acceleration and deceleration. As for the existed device, a joystick device has been used as a Man-Machine interface, however, the operator's body shock is remarkably exerted when an auto-wheelchair rapidly starts or stops moving. In this case, the operation is approximately ON-OFF control. Here, the change in the acceleration was avoided by applying a smoothness velocity control. The developed system could provide the velocity control by operator's nodding actions. In the test operation, the good evaluation was obtained regardless of increasing the number of operation process.
