Abstract

To investigate a high Reynolds number flow past a cosine-shaped hill in a channel of finite depth under stable stratifications, we have performed a two-dimensional LES (Large Eddy Simulation) based on a dynamic Smagorinsky model at a Reynolds number of 105. Compared with the previous DNS (Direct Numerical Simulation) results with a Reynolds number of 2×103, the present numerical study gave similar features for the flow around the hill. Namely, it was shown that under certain conditions, the flow around the hill shows a periodic unsteadiness which may or may not decay with time.
