Abstract

The objective of this study is to analyze kinetics and kinematics of the artificial knee joint and estimate its performance in deep flexion. We performed the simulation using 3D mathematical model. The simulation was performed during squatting. The calculation diverged when the flexion angle was over 90°. Before the divergence, the tibia rotated external relative to the femur. Since such motion could not occur in normal knee, it may be the reason for the divergence. And it was also shown that the contact forces of patello-femoral joint are larger than these of tibio-femoral joint when the flexion angle was over 70°. The new design of patello-femoral joint is needed to reduce the contact stress, especially for the prostheses which have a large range of motion.
