Abstract

This feature describes how a thermohydrodynamic (THD) transient model of an aligned face seal during start-up has been improved by including a thermoelastic distortion calculation, using the method of influence coefficients. It compares the results obtained with this 2D transient model, when the steady state is reached, with those of a 3D stationary model, which were experimentally validated. A case of thermal instability illustrates how the thermoelastohydrodynamic (TEHD) model may be useful in optimizing mechanical seal design.
