Abstract

The instantaneous and non-intrusive measurement of the flow velocity in a 2-dimensional plane of a flow field is possible by means of a new experimental technique, called particle image velocimetry (PIV). An experimental set-up for the application of PIV in wind tunnels has been developed. First results of the measurement of the flow field in a low turbulence wind tunnel are presented. Problems affecting the operation of PIV in a wind tunnel are discussed. The instantaneous and non-intrusive measurement of the flow velocity in a 2-dimensional plane of a flow field is possible by means of a new experimental technique, called particle image velocimetry (PIV).
