Abstract

For the numerical simulation of flood waves that develop in two dimensions it is necessary to use algorithms with shock-capturing capabilities. Two schemes, the MacCormack and the Runge Kutta Finite volume scheme designed for calculations on a rectilinear grid are initially presented in this paper. Additionally the latter scheme was prepared for calculation using a triangular grid. The results obtained by the application of these algorithms to flood wave problems were compared with those recorded in a physical model study. Good agreement was observed. It was concluded therefore that the MacCormack scheme and the Runge Kutta Finite Volume scheme may be used with reasonable confidence to predict a 2D dam break flood.
