Abstract

This paper describes a design of collision avoidance system adapted to driver characteristics and surroundings hazardous level, assisting drivers decision making in braking. The assist method is designed to warn the driver and control the vehicle for without annoying human driver during normal driving situations, to completely avoid collision in vehicle following situations and to reduce the severity of collision in unexpected critical situation. Conventionally, hazardous indices of forward vehicle collision are usually determined by using time-to-collision or time-headway, but such indices do not consider driver characteristics and road surface condition. An algorithm which takes into account the driver characteristics and surroundings hazardous level is proposed, and implemented into the warning system of experimental vehicle.
