Abstract

Clinicians may encounter patients who consume caustic agents for either exploratory/accidental means, or for suicidal purposes. There is some debate in the literature with regards to the evaluation of asymptomatic individuals who consume caustics for suicidal purposes, with some advocating esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) for all suicidal patients, even if asymptomatic. The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate if asymptomatic suicidal patients who ingest caustic agents routinely need an EGD performed.
