Abstract

This study aims to investigate the influence on the basic cutting performances when changed the number of flutes in high speed end milling and to develop the new end mill for the high speed and high efficient machining. The hardened steel (SKD11 (HRC60)) and (Ti, Al) N coated carbide square end mill were used in this experiment, and tool wear and finished surface roughness were researched by side cutting under the dry cutting condition. The following results were obtained. 1) When cutting with the plural cutting edges simultaneously and cutting with a single cutting edge, those wear behavior was different. 2) The amount of the material removal to the tool life did not correspond to the ratio of the removal rate proportional to the number of flutes.
