Abstract

In this report, the authors' recent results on three-dimensional crack propagation analyses are presented. The directions and rates of crack propagation at points on crack front are predicted based on the stress-intensity factors that are computed by virtual crack closure-integral method (VCCM) for quadratic tetrahedral finite elements. Once, a new crack geometry is defined, the mesh is regenerated by an automatic mesh generation software. Hence, the finite element analysis is repeated. By repeating, the processes of mesh generation, finite element analysis, stress intensity factor evaluation and crack geometry update, we can perform a three-dimensional crack propagation analysis.
