Abstract

The importance of performance evaluation at early stages of product design has been widely acknowledged empirically, intuitively and academically. However, few studies discuss it based on quantitative indices. In this paper, we attempt to measure the load and the efficiency of design by introducing a basic index used in the information theory, namely, the formula of Shannon's entropy, and derive a simple expression for quantitative estimation of design complexities. We also apply this expression to the actual design processes of machines for handling flexible media in order to verify the expression's reliability and rationality for the purpose of practical use in design evaluation..
