Abstract

In recent years, there has been an increasing concerns for and interest in global protection of the environment. Grease is no exception and the demand for environment-friendly products has been rising. To meet this requirement, greases containing highly-biodegradable vegetable oils as their base oils are utilized. The type of vegetable oils generally used is rapeseed oil, but there are some that employ castor oil as their base oil. Those vegetable oils are renewable resources, and will be prospective substitutes for base oils made out of fossil fuel in years to come. As for thickeners, calcium soap and lithium soap are used. In this report, the heat resistance, oxidation stability, durability, and biodegradability of lubricating greases based on vegetable oils are discussed.
