Abstract

In this paper, radio propagation measurements and analysis are presented to investigate the channel characteristics of millimeter wave (mmWave) transmission for outdoor cellular communication systems. The measurement campaign is performed in a ski resort town placed in Pyeongchang, South Korea, which is the venue of the coming Winter Olympics in 2018. A 28 GHz synchronous channel sounder system is used in conducting the channel measurements. From the measurements, the spatio-temporal channel characteristics such as path loss, multipath delay, angular statistics are analyzed. The mmWave radio propagation parameters and the corresponding channel models based on the 3GPP spatial channel model (SCM) are also presented. Since a trial service is planned during the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games, this research is significant to demonstrate the emerging 5G technologies. Additionally, blocking tests, which measure the path loss variation when there are some obstacles, are discussed in this paper.
