Abstract

In general, a urinary tract infection (UTI) is a clinical diagnosis and testing is typically unnecessary or should be limited to patients with UTI symptoms. However, we anecdotally see the diagnosis being made in emergency department (ED) patients without UTI symptoms based solely on urine testing (UT) results. This can lead to overtreatment with antibiotics. We investigated how often ED patients who are prescribed an antibiotic for UTI, actually have UTI symptoms or positive urine culture results.
