Abstract
Background: Alopecia areata is a complex autoimmune disorder causing nonscarring hair loss. A postulated mechanism is antigenization of hair follicles by CD4+ T-cells. Previous case reports have found destruction of pigmented hair with sparing of grey, nonpigmented hair in alopecia lesions, potentially due to antigenicity of melanin. This study sought to characterize the prevalence of alopecia areata amongst different hair color phenotypes.
