Abstract

Background and aims: Interleukin-12 (IL-12) is a potent immune- stimulant cytokine that has shown antitumor effect in several pre- clinical studies. The mechanism of action of IL-12 is complex and includes the activation of the immune system with stimulation of IFN-g production, and inhibition of angiogenesis. However, the systemic administration of IL-12 causes severe toxicity. Therefore, diverse strategies to achieve controlled expression of IL-12 are being developed.
