Abstract
Contact pressure and sliding rate are theoretically high for the crossed helical gears. Therefore, the scoring takes place more frequently on the surface of crossed helical gears than spur gears. This contact stress state of crossed helical gear can be approximated to the contact between non intersecting and non parallel cylinders. However, the tests on the contact of crossed cylinders have not carried put very much. The important factors for the scoring development are relative sliding velocity, axial angle and contact pressure. The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the effect of each factor of the scoring strength with the Crossed-cylinders testing machine. In this study, the operating time under various conditions of rejative sliding velocity was investigated. Moreover, the effect of the direction of rotation was investigated too. As the result, the strong effect of relative sliding velocity, axial angle and direction of rotation for the scoring strength were observed.
