Abstract

The anesthetic medication ketamine, an anesthetic agent and N-methyl-d-aspartate glutamate receptor antagonist, has recently been studied using sub-anesthetic doses for its antidepressant effects in adults with treatment-resistant depression (TRD). In adult TRD, a single infusion of ketamine has been shown to significantly reduce depression within hours, and serial infusions may improve response rates. However, no information is yet available about ketamine for adolescent TRD. Our study objective was to investigate the efficacy of intravenous ketamine for TRD in adolescents.
