Abstract
Plain radiography is the first line study for low-risk trauma patients undergoing ED evaluation of possible cervical spine injury because of its lower cost and radiation exposure relative to CT. We sought to determine if body mass index (BMI), as a measurable indicator of body habitus, is a useful tool to predict who should go directly to CT because plain radiographic views would be inadequate to rule out injury, thereby reducing the time, expense, and radiation associated with two radiographic studies.
