Abstract

Purpose: Giant Cell Myocarditis (GCM) is a rare but fatal form of myocarditis with a median survival time of less than 6 months in the absence of a transplant. Whether to transplant patients with GCM remains controversial as there are numerous case reports of recurrence in the transplanted heart and poor survival thought to be related to the disease recurrence. Long term survival, cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV), and freedom from non-fatal major adverse cardiac events (nf-MACE) have not been studied. We sought to determine the long-term outcomes of recipients who were unknowingly transplanted for GCM.
