Abstract

Background: Disorders of alopecia may be an indicator of a serious medical condition, lead to psychologic distress, or leave permanent scars. Since hair stylists routinely assess hair and scalp, they are able to detect, educate, and refer clients with various forms of alopecia. A survey of licensed hairstylists showed that most received some alopecia training while in beauty school (69%), but most were unfamiliar with the forms of alopecia. About 90% of respondents were willing to discuss alopecia with clients if they were trained.
