Abstract

Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome are two of many centralized pain disorders characterized by widespread body pain and comorbid symptoms, such as fatigue, sleep and memory problems. Whereas the diagnosis and label of fibromyalgia has been controversial in the medical community for some time, it is now among the best studied pain conditions, with strong evidence of prominent involvement of the central nervous system, and best treated with therapies aimed at the CNS. Treatment of these conditions should include patient education, as well as a combination of nonopioid medications, behavioral therapies, lifestyle changes, and complementary treatments, as appropriate.
