Abstract

Numerous studies have evaluated the presence of anemia in patients with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), and conflicting findings have characterized this anemia as either anemia of chronic disease (ACD) or iron deficiency anemia (IDA). Patients with HS have immune dysregulation and elevated inflammatory mediators, including interleukin (IL)-6, which have been linked with ACD in other inflammatory conditions. Interleukin-6 induces ferritin transcription and translation, resulting in increased iron storage, as well as stimulation of hepcidin production, resulting in decreased iron absorption and release in the circulation.
