Abstract

Next year sees the 25th anniversary of the birth of satellite communications since the launch in 1969 of Skynet 1. The intervening years have seen the advent of universal communications systems for both military and civilian purposes of increasing technical sophistication, to the extent that the 1991–92 Gulf War has been called the ‘first space war’. Here Dennis Cum‐mings celebrates those achievements and looks ahead to the next generation of communications satellites and their enhanced capabilities.
