Abstract

Since the advent of erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA)[1], upgrading transmission capacity by optical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) has been drawing increasingly strong attention[2,3]. Indispensable in WDM systems, EDFA has some problems to be solved. Among them, a major one is a gain bandwidth narrowing in a system with concatenated EDFAs, which results from non-uniform spectral gain profile of EDFA. To avoid this, equalization by adjusting transmitter powers has been proposed[4]. In this paper, we show that gain bandwidth narrowing can be suppressed by properly choosing a saturation depth of EDFA. Furthermore, based on this result, we successfully confirmed 2.5 Gb/s, 4 channels WDM transmission over 1060 km using 18 EDFAs.
