Abstract

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by a complex interaction between skin barrier dysfunction and a dysregulated immune system. Due to the resulting skin barrier defects and inflammation, AD patients suffer from dry and itchy skin. Treatment with corticosteroids and systemic immunosuppression can ease the symptoms but may cause severe side effects. Novel local treatment options with fewer side effects are required, especially for the treatment of mild AD.
