Abstract

In this study the method to determine the R-curve behavior of alumina using stable fracture of straight notched bending bar and compliance method was proposed. The load-displacement curve analysis was presented for the three-point bend specimen. The relationship between the crack length and the crack stress intensity factor in stable crack extension, that was, the R-curve was obtained from the change of compliance on the stable crack extension in the load-displacement curve. Strong R-curve effects with increasing toughness over 0.5mm or more of crack extension and the final plateau were observed in the material. It was considered that the clear increase in crack resistance in alumina is a consequence of increasing contact shielding in the crack wake.
