Abstract

Combination of rotational and linear motion is utilized in a machine tool, a polishing machine, etc. This paper presents an electro-magnetic actuator having 2-degree-of-freedom of rotational and linear actuation. It is based on a switched reluctance motor (SRM), and consists of 2 salient pole stator and a salient pole rotor supported by a set of rotary-linear bearing. Torque and thrust force in axial direction can be controlled independently by PWM current control of each windings placed at the salient poles in both stators. The prototype actuator is designed to perform 2-DOF actuation with max. rotational speed of 1000rpm and max. thrust force of 30N. This paper also describes the electric driver in which the number of current sensor for phase current control is reduced. In the actuator performance testing, it has been confirmed that independently control of rotational speed and linear position is realized.
