Abstract

IVC measurements are a noninvasive measure of intravascular volume and may assist in the management of the critically ill. Both longitudinal (LONG) and transverse (TRV) techniques of measurement have been advocated but not compared in bedside ultrasonography (BU). This study set out to compare the two planes, and to compare transverse plane measurements by BU with those of echo-technicians interpreted by echocardiologists (ET). We hypothesized that there is no difference between BU measurements in TRV and LONG planes, nor between measurements by BU and ET.
