Abstract

Experimental and numerical flow visualizations are presented to study laminar mixed convection with flow reversal in the thermal entrance region of a horizontal square channel. Flow reversal, that is, the separation bubble near the upper wall at the entrance region of the channel was visualized by a dye-injection method. The unsteady Navier-Stokes equations were solved by using the QUICK and SIMPLE method. We analyzed temperature dependence of physical properties in the water used for this simulation. It was shown that the experimental results for the stream lines are coincident with those obtained from three-dimensional numerical analysis. The effects of wall temperature and the Reynolds number on the size of the flow reversal region were also studied and three-dimensional mechanisms of flow reversal were discussed.
