Abstract

Experiments are reported in which the differences in lightness and yellowness that could be visually observed in daylight for pairs of carded-wool samples were related to the differences in colour measurements. The fifteen observers who took part could all distinguish differences in lightness measurements of more than 4.0 in Y or 2.0 in L* and differences in yellowness measurements of 2.5 in y – Z or 2.0 in b*, but most could not distinguish any differences of less than 2.0 in Y or 1.0 in L* or less than 1.0 in either Y – Z or b*.
