Abstract

One of the most efficient and beneficial utilizations of molten salt is an application to nuclear energy. The authors have been promoting nuclear energy technology based on thorium molten salt as the Thorium Molten Salt Nuclear Energy Synergetic System (THORIMS-NES). This system is a combination of a fission power reactor of a molten salt reactor (MSR) and an accelerator molten salt breeder (AMSB) for the production of fissile 233U, with a connecting chemical processing facility. This chapter describes the following items: energy prediction, history of light water reactors and fast breeder reactor, development history of thorium MSR in the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, concept of THORIMS-NES, advantages of thorium and molten salt, and recent MSR design results of FUJI-U3 using 233U fuel, FUJI-Pu, large-sized super-FUJI, and pilot plant mini-FUJI. Also, other subjects such as AMSB, chemical processing facility, and other recent studies in the world are described.
