Abstract

At the end of the year 2012, Posiva, the Finnish nuclear waste management company, submitted to the Government an application for construction license of a disposal facility for spent fuel from the Loviisa and Olkiluoto nuclear power stations. The license was granted in November 2015, and based on the current plans, Posiva may now become the first in the world to start operating a geological repository for high-level nuclear waste. However, after construction of the facility, Posiva will still need another license for operating the facility. Assuming timely implementation of the plans and successful licensing process the repository could be in operation in the early 2020s.This chapter discusses the process that led to granting of the license. In addition, some comments are made on the challenges remaining in the implementation and final licensing of the facility.
