Abstract
Permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) technology has received a great deal of attention for in-situ groundwater bioremediation in past decades. In this regard, calcium peroxide (CaO2) as an oxygen releasing compound (ORC) can slowly release oxygen and remediate hydrocarbon pollution by enhancement of the aerobic reactions in the subsurface environment. Moreover, CaO2 nanoparticles with tremendous surface area lead to rapid and efficient benzene bioremediation with low loading of CaO2. In this chapter, application of controlled-release oxygen nanocomposite in a permeable reactive barrier for groundwater remediation is investigated. Furthermore, a new class of ORCs that encapsulate with natural polymers is introduced. The synthesis of slow oxygen-releasing polymer nanocomposites (ORPNCs) as cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and efficient materials for benzene contaminated groundwater remediation is investigated. Furthermore, oxygen releasing properties and the benzene removal potential of ORPNCs were studied using batch and continuous experiments.
