Physical Data: mp 94–95 °C (dec); pKa 4.8 in water, 7.3 in DMSO.2 Form Supplied in: colorless crystals; commercially available. Preparative Method: Meldrum's acid can be synthesized by condensation of malonic acid with acetic anhydride20 or isoprenyl acetate25 in the presence of sulfuric acid. Purification: recrystallization from acetone and water. Handling, Storage, and Precaution: it should be stored in a cool (2–8 °C) and dark location. It should be handled with gloves in a fume hood.
