Abstract

Body composition contributes to risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD), with excess adiposity in the visceral compartment associated with the greatest risk. South Asians are at greater risk for CVD and we have previously reported in the Multicultural-Community Health Assessment Trial (M-CHAT) that South Asians have greater visceral adipose tissue (VAT) than Europeans, despite having similar BMIs. The molecular mechanisms underlying these ethnic-specific differences in body composition are not fully understood.
