Abstract

A low-background ZnS scintillator cell based on a design by Lucas has been developed for 222Rn detection. Typical cells have 63% detection efficiency and 3 counts per day background. The cells have been used in measurements of 222Rn emanation rate into vacuum from materials to be used under water in the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) solar neutrino detector. The results are presented and the impact on the SNO detector design is discussed.
