Abstract

Objectives Analyze the epidemiological profile of women who died from hypertensive syndrome (HS) and its contribution to this problem for maternal death overall in the Santos region. Methods Data was provided by the Ministry of Health of Brazil in www.datasus.gov.br (accessed in June/2014). The survey was conducted in the information system about the death in Santos (priority region of the state of Sao Paulo in the period 2002–2012. The number of maternal death was divided into maternal death in pregnancy, delivery and abortion and maternal death in puerperium up to 42 days, considering all causes of maternal death and identifying the proportion of deaths due to hypertensive syndromes (HS). Some epidemiological aspects of these women were analyzed including the place of residence. Results In the period analyzed (2002–2012) we investigated a total of 174 maternal deaths, of which 34 (19.54%, 63.12 ration) occurred due to hypertensive syndromes. Ratio of maternal death from hypertension/regional 12.33 Total deaths in adolescents (10–19 years) for hypertensive disorders in region 05 (14.70%) Total deaths in women not white for hypertensive disorders in region 15 (44.11%) Total deaths of women with 08 or more years of study by hypertensive disorders in region 13 (38.25%) Status of women dying from hypertensive disorders in the region 23 (67, 64%) were single women, without reference to stable union Place of death non-hospital or at homes of women affected by hypertensive disorders in region 06 (17.64%) Cities with most deaths by hypertensive disorders in the region Sao Vicente, Praia Grande and Santos (adding up to 93.75 cases) Number of deaths due to hypertensive disorders in the region during the postpartum period up to 42 days after delivery 20 (58.82%) Amount of incomplete or inconsistent data on the death certificate Ethnicity (6%), education (29.41%), location of death (17.64%), time of death in relation to delivery (20.58%), in marital status item perhaps stable union was not considered Conclusions Hypertensive syndromes contribute significantly to maternal mortality in the region studied, mainly in the postpartum period, indicating the need for specialized care for this problem. Sao Vicente, Praia Grande and Santos cities together have the largest number of cases; strategies for prevention can prioritize them. It is timely for the region qualification for filling out the data on the death certificate, this being a step relevant to improving the understanding of this phenomenon in the region. Disclosures Ł.
