Abstract

In this paper are quoted results obtained with a two-fold cotton yarn and a singles nylon yarn lubricated with spermaceti wax, Puremor oil. methyl stearate and with homologous series of chemicals : normal paraffins, fatty alcohols, silicone oils and polyethylene glycols. It has been possible to offer an explanation of almost all of the observed phenomena. This has been in terms of a hypothesis advanced elsewhere to account for the lubrication of nylon monofilament. This hypothesis suggests that in addition to the accepted mechanism of boundary lubrication whereby layers of lubricant molecules are adsorbed on the surfaces of sliding bodies thus reducing both the intensity of the adhesive forces at the surfaces and the occasions when intimate contact occurs, there is another effect, only possible with materials which are permeable to lubricant molecules, whereby the lubricant molecules can penetrate the amorphous regions of a polymer rupturing some of the weaker bonds and, in this way, alter the mechanical ...
