Abstract

Knowledge and skills are the driving forces of economic growth and social development for any country. Countries with higher and better levels of skills adjust more effectively to the challenges and opportunities of world of work. As India moves progressively towards becoming a ‘knowledge economy’ it becomes increasingly important that the country should focus on advancement of skills and these skills have to be relevant to the emerging economic environment. In the changing global scenario, employment possibilities of graduates and Post-Graduates of general subjects are becoming increasingly limited. The education imparted at degree level is not oriented to the market needs and neither is it skill based. Nowadays we usually face this problem that a person is knowledgeable but not skilled enough to do a particular job. Due to this changing nature of work and employment, individuals now look for more flexible and multi-skilling learning opportunities for mobility across employment sector and geographic locations. The formal education system has not been able to provide these opportunities. In India formal education is almost useless without having the skill based knowledge needed to properly use the information.
