Abstract

Our objective was to describe practice patterns and surgical outcomes of penile prosthesis (PP) surgery in the HIV seropositive population. To our knowledge, such population-based data has not been published. The New York Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System (SPARCS) database was queried for ICD and CPT codes indicating insertion or replacement of malleable or inflatable PP from 1995-2014. Patients with HIV were identified based on ICD codes. Reoperations were identified by ICD and CPT codes for prosthesis removal, repair, or replacement. Descriptive statistics relating to practice patterns and surgical outcomes were generated. Reoperation rates in the HIV positive and negative populations were compared by Chi-square testing. ... 91 HIV positive patients underwent PP insertion. Implant selection patterns are depicted in the table. Reoperations occurred in 14/91 (15.4%) HIV positive patients and 1830/14,563 (12.6%) HIV negative patients (p=0.516). The infection rate in the HIV cohort was <10% (SPARCS data agreement prohibits reporting data pertaining to fewer than 11 patients).
