Abstract

Advances in HIV treatment have dramatically increased the survival rate and quality of life for those living with HIV, leading to the reclassification of HIV as a chronic illness. However, with these improvements come a host of new psychosocial problems that can be particularly difficult for HIV-positive adolescents. The purpose of the STEP UP program is to create a reliable and sustainable resource for these patients to help them manage the stresses of growing up with HIV. Ultimately, the goal is for patients to successfully transition both medically and socially into their adult roles with the support and tools provided by STEP UP.
