Abstract

"Mechanical Engineering Seminar" is a class offered by each laboratory to junior students as orientation to their theses to be assigned next year and our "Mobility Laboratory" has provided seminars for welfare machines with such themes as "The Dynamics of Wheelchairs" in 2001 and "Mechatronics Exercises" in 2002. In "The Dynamics of Wheelchairs", students were instructed to work out a way to improve a conventional joystick-controlled powered wheelchair for those who have difficulty to operate such type of wheelchair because of their disabilities in their shoulder, arms and hands. The following conditions must be taken into consideration : 1) it must not be joystick operated and 2) its steering gear must not be fixed. Students came up on an idea to introduce a laptop computer and a controller for video game to the operating system of the wheelchair, which led to the invention of a new type of wheelchair for the target users.
