Abstract

Multilayer coatings are widely used to various optical parts, for example, multimode optical fibers, beam splitters, antireflection coatings and so on. In the design of optical multilayer coatings, refractive index and thickness of each layer must be determined in accordance with the specifications on spectral reflectance or transmittance. In this paper, sensitivities of the spectral reflectance for design parameters are considered at the optimization process to obtain robust design solutions. If an insensitive design is obtained, the manufacturing cost may be reduced. The thickness and the index of each layer, the incident angle and the wavelength of incident ray are treated as the design parameters. Our developed design system is used to solve the optimization problem. Some robust solutions are obtained by using our design system.
